Czech Grand Design
Czech Grand Design is an annual award from Design Academy of the Czech Republic for the best work in design, fashion, jewelry, graphic design, photography and illustration.
The annual Czech Grand Design Award is organized by Profil Media agency and is aiming to draw attention to the local design scene. It is an opportunity to meet local talent and for designers to get publicity and recognition. CGD is organized to honor the best of the past year in the nominated design categories.
The Academy of Design of the Czech Republic is a group of curators, theoreticians, critics and publicists in design who are annually rewarding local talents on the basis of a wide spectrum of experts.
There are 86 creators in total who have been nominated for the CGD 2023. Nominees of 2023 have presented extraordinary collections of glassware and furniture, fashion pieces, product design, everyday objects and much more. Evolution of the established designers as well as new emerging names with strong dominance of local female artists. 2023 was a fruitful year for the Czech design scene.
On February 29 three finalists of each category will be announced at the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno accompanied by the exhibition opening “Out of the Blue” by last year’s Grand designers, Terezia Lexová and Štěpán Smetana.
On March 3 the winners will be awarded during a creative gala dinner at Stavovský theater in Prague. The award will have an absolute winner, the Grand Designer of the Year. One person will be listed in the Hall of Fame of Czech Design for a significant contribution to the design scene.
The price itself is designed by the 2022 Grand designers and is an idea catcher capturing the wildest of dreams and visions. CGD visual is created by the graphic designer Martina Černá and animator Ondřej Mencl and is inspired by the award. It represents a matter that could either form into something solid or shatter, just like fame could.
