Shape Your Memories in Clay
Many of us took pottery classes as kids—I know I did. My family still proudly displays some of my gloriously hideous yet deeply authentic creations at home. But I loved every second of it. The entire process—from kneading the clay on the wheel to painting and finally seeing the kiln-fired result—felt like magic.
Sometimes, I miss it. Fortunately, there are now plenty of studios—not just in Prague—where you can get your hands dirty again. The bonus? You’ll leave with your own handmade pieces that make every cup of matcha or coffee feel a little more special.
Pottery workshops are a brilliant way to spend quality time with your mum, your best friend, or even treat yourself to a solo date. Here are three of my favorite spots that beautifully blend clay, creativity, and coffee:
Kafe a Hrnky
Location: Prague
Arguably the most iconic pottery studio in Prague, Kafe a Hrnky is tucked away on the charming Nerudova Street. It’s more than just a studio—it’s a cozy café where you can sip great coffee, enjoy homemade treats, and relax in their lush garden (yes, it’s more garden than courtyard).
The vibe is warm and nostalgic—far from cold minimalism. The concept is simple: choose from a variety of pre-made mugs, plates, and bowls, and decorate them however you like. If you're looking to build something completely from scratch, this might not be your spot—here, you’re more of an artist than a potter.
The café opened in 2018, but the ceramic workshop behind it dates back to post-revolution times—Václav Havel himself owned a piece. This place celebrates tradition, the human touch, and storytelling. You can also book group sessions for birthdays, corporate events, or bridal showers.
KERA Studio & Store
Location: Prague & Brno
For those outside Prague—or anyone looking for a more hands-on experience—KERA Studio offers locations in both Prague and Brno. Here, you create your ceramic piece entirely from scratch. Want to make a full pour-over coffee set? Go for it.
My favorite is their two-part workshop. In the first session, you craft your own dripper, coffee pot, and two cups with guidance from a skilled instructor. A week later, you return to glaze and decorate your creations however you like.
The studio’s minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired interior sets a calm and creative tone. Other workshops include wheel-throwing and oversized vase-making. It's a peaceful place to slow down and reconnect with your creativity.
Šlikr Studio
Location: Prague
Last but definitely not least—Šlikr Studio. Their Instagram bio says it best: “Come squish some clay.” That’s exactly the kind of warm, quirky, and beautifully human energy you’ll find here.
This is the place to let your imagination run wild. From simple cups to tote bags with 3D monster designs—anything goes. Their full course spans three sessions: sculpting your piece from raw clay, glazing it, and finally, picking it up to take home.
There's also a lovely café on-site, making this space about more than just ceramics—it’s about community, creativity, and comfort.
Pottery is more than mugs and bowls—it’s a return to slow creation, to the joy of making something with your own hands. Whether you're seeking a new hobby, a heartfelt gift, or a digital detox, these studios offer a beautiful escape. So go on—squish some clay. Who knows? Maybe I’ll see you there.
